About these sizes
Source: Protean’s Guidelines for filling PAN New Application (DSC based, Form 93 / Form 94), point (k), specifications table. The page shows no date; we read it 6 Nov 2026. It covers the online PAN application signed with a DSC. We could not open UTIITSL’s rules, which may differ.
What Protean’s PAN guidelines say
| Item | Photo | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| File type | JPEG, colour | JPEG, colour |
| File size | Max. 20 KB | Max. 10 KB |
| Size as written | 3.5X2.5 cms | 2X4.5 cms |
| What we make | 2.5 cm wide × 3.5 cm high, 197 × 276 px | 4.5 cm wide × 2 cm high, 354 × 157 px |
| Resolution | 200 DPI | 200 DPI |
Protean writes the sizes without saying which side is the width. A photo is taller than wide and a signature wider than tall, so we read them that way (our reading). The pixels are our arithmetic at 200 DPI. Supporting documents on the same page: PDF/A or JPEG, at most 300 KB a page, 200 DPI, black and white. Read by us 6 Nov 2026 · next check by 6 Feb 2027. PAN photo and signature, step by step
- Photo: a recent colour photo of your face. Pick PAN photo, add it and download. It is cropped from the centre to 2.5 × 3.5 cm.
- Signature: sign on plain white paper and photograph it from above. Pick PAN signature, add it and download. Clean up makes the paper white and trims the margins.
- Upload both where your PAN application asks for the scanned photo and signature.
If the upload screen shows other numbers, for example because you apply through UTIITSL, use My own size with those numbers.
Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. FormJig is independent. It is not affiliated with Protean, UTIITSL, the Income Tax Department or any government body. Always check your own form’s instructions.
Questions
What size is a PAN card photo?
Protean’s guidelines for the online PAN application give a colour JPEG of 3.5 × 2.5 cm at 200 DPI, at most 20 KB. A photo is taller than it is wide, so we make it 2.5 cm wide and 3.5 cm high: 197 × 276 pixels.
What size is the PAN signature?
2 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI, at most 10 KB, JPEG. A signature is wider than it is tall, so we make it 4.5 cm wide and 2 cm high: 354 × 157 pixels.
Is it the same for UTIITSL?
We could not open UTIITSL’s own rules, so this page uses Protean’s numbers. UTIITSL may ask for something different: check the upload screen in your form, and use My own size if its numbers differ.
Protean says colour. Is a cleaned signature still fine?
The file is a colour JPEG either way. Clean up makes the paper white and the ink near black; untick it to keep the ink colour exactly as photographed.
Some pages say 50 KB for the PAN photo. Which is right?
Some guides, including help articles on Protean’s own site, mention 50 KB. Its guidelines page for the online application says 20 KB at most. A file under 20 KB meets both, so we stop there.
Is 1 KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes here?
Forms rarely say. We count your minimum at 1,024 bytes per KB and your maximum at 1,000, so the file passes either way of counting. The result shows the exact bytes.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The resizing runs inside your browser, on your phone or computer. We tested every page with a network log: no request carried the picture. See the privacy page for the details.
