How we add KB
First we save the picture at a higher JPG quality, up to the top setting. If that is not enough, we enlarge it. Enlarged pixels are smoothed copies of the ones you had, so the file is bigger but not sharper, and the result says so.
We never add empty or hidden bytes. Padding makes the number bigger without making the picture any better. If your target cannot be reached honestly, you see the closest real file and the reason.
How close to the number
"To 50 KB" aims for 50 KB up to 20% above it (50–60 KB). If your form also gives a maximum, open "My own" and enter both numbers.

Questions
Will the photo look better?
No. Higher quality keeps what is there, and enlarging only smooths the pixels you had. A very small or very plain picture may not reach the target; you then see the closest real file. A photo already bigger than the target is made smaller instead, by lowering the quality and then the pixel size.
Why could it not reach my number?
A very small or very plain picture has little detail to save. After the top quality and up to 4× the pixels, we stop rather than pad. The closest real file is still there to save.
Is 1 KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes here?
Forms rarely say. We count your minimum at 1,024 bytes per KB and your maximum at 1,000, so the file passes either way of counting. The result shows the exact bytes.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The resizing runs inside your browser, on your phone or computer. We tested every page with a network log: no request carried the picture. See the privacy page for the details.
